Foot & ankle surgical treatments

If you have a foot problem that does not respond to "conservative" management, your podiatrist will help you determine when surgical intervention may be helpful. Often when pain or deformity persists, surgery may be appropriate to alleviate discomfort or to restore the function of your foot.

If you’re about to undergo foot or ankle surgery – as with any surgical procedure – you’ll need specific examinations beforehand to optimize the surgical outcome.

Prior to surgery, we will review your medical history and medications. We may order other tests that help evaluate your health status, such as blood studies, an EKG and tests to further evaluate the circulatory status of your legs and feet. Depending on the results of those tests and assessment of your specific medical conditions, we may advise a consultation with other medical specialists.

The type of foot surgery you have will determine the length and type of aftercare required to promote an uneventful and rapid recovery. Basic post-operative care includes rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE). Bandages, splints, casts, surgical shoes, canes, crutches or a wheelchair may also be necessary to ensure your safe recovery. We will also instruct you as to whether or not you can bear weight on your foot after an operation.

You can recover more quickly and satisfactorily by carefully following our instructions.
