Listen to your feet

Your feet must last a lifetime: most Americans log an amazing 75,000 miles on their feet by the time they reach age 50. And there are many miles left to go beyond that milestone! You need to ensure your feet are up to the journey.

Regular foot care is essential if your feet are to carry you happily through life. With every step, you place up to 1.5 times your body weight on your heel. On average, you take about 10,000 steps every day. Let’s break that down: if you weigh 150 pounds, you put 225 pounds of force on your feet with every step.

To perform well under these punishing conditions, your feet should be treated with a little respect and given regular attention.

What your feet are trying to tell you

While you’re paying attention to your feet, learn to understand what they can tell you about your overall health. Here are a few symptoms:

  • Discoloration – a change in the color of your feet – may be a sign of poor circulation, a weight issue, or even diabetes.
  • Swelling - temporary swelling or inflammation, such as that consistent with an injury.
