Shoes and Orthotics FAQ

Are all custom foot orthotics the same?

No. We frequently see patients who say they have tried orthotics in the past and they didn’t work. It is important to understand there are many different techniques to make an orthotic as well as many different materials from which they are made. If you've tried orthotics previously and they didn't work, it is possible you could have been fitted with an improper orthotic. It is important that the orthotics are made by a reputable laboratory with strict quality-control measures and that they are fitted by someone with extensive experience.

Will my orthotics last forever?

No. No material will last forever and your feet may change as well. You may periodically require a new prescription, due to wear and tear of your orthotic or due to changes that occur in your feet over time.

How do I know I my shoes fit properly?

Shoe shopping definitely involves more than just the selection of a shoe! For the best fit, do not select a shoe size alone. Have a sales associate measure both of your feet every time you are shopping for shoes. Shoes should fit the longest and widest foot. The ball of your foot should fit comfortably in the widest part of the shoe and you should be able to wiggle your toes freely within the shoe’s toe box. You should have the width of one finger space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe when you stand up. Most importantly, the shoe should feel comfortable on both feet as you walk.

What is the best time of day to shop for shoes?

It is best to shop for shoes in the afternoon or early evening. Feet have a tendency to swell as the day progresses.

My feet have been the same size for years, but I had my feet measured recently and they are now a different size. Can feet change?

Yes. Feet can change in both length and width. Changes in feet can be caused by weight loss or weight gain, too, as well as diseases.
