About SEFA

The leaves may be falling, but you shouldn't!

More accidents occur at home than anywhere else, but preventing accidents at home takes just a little forethought and planning. Here are some home safety and fall prevention tips:

  • Wear low-heeled or rubber-soled shoes that are supportive and fit well. Wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Learn and use mobility aids as needed
  • Turn on lights to avoid dark areas. Get light switches that glow. Replace light bulbs that burn out immediately.
  • Arrange furniture to create clear pathways. Keep furniture in the same place.
  • Firmly attach carpet with non-skid or double-sided tape.
  • Select a carpet pattern that does not visually hide the edges of steps.
  • Eliminate uneven floor surfaces.
  • Watch out for all pets.
  • Consider getting an electrical emergency response system.

  • Never leave objects on the stairs.
  • Place contrasting color strips on the first and last steps.
  • Place hand rails on both sides of stairways and use them. Fix any loose handrails.
  • Get rid of throw rugs, if possible. If you must have throw rugs, avoid placing them at the top or bottom of stairways, and properly secure the rugs with carpet tape to prevent slippage.
  • Have an electrician put a light switch at the top and the bottom of the stairs.
